A review of current knowledge on the taxonomy of endemic plants in the northern Western Ghats, one of the most botanically distinctive landscapes in India.
The work covered documentation and research feeding the mobile application “Endemic Plants of the Western Ghats”, freely available to the public on Android and iOS; IUCN Red List assessment for endemic plants; and native plant propagation and nursery maintenance.
This is the background that now informs species selection and plantation strategy in the ARR projects I design — knowing which species belong in a landscape, and which will actually establish there, is a taxonomic question before it is a carbon one.
Key outcomes
Rediscovered Croton gibsonianus Nimmo, the only endemic tree of the northern Western Ghats, after 170 years at Harishchandragad
Co-described a new species, Croton chakrabartyi Dhabak & Nandikar (Euphorbiaceae)
Completed IUCN Red List assessments for Barleria sepalosa, Salacia fruticosa and Salacia brunoniana
